A Fantastically Surreal Day

After 17+ years, this self-proclaimed Montenerican (Montenegrin-American) has finally, and officially, become a citizen of the United States of America.

Braving the ocean to find my way on the other shore was not easy.

But today,  it has all worked itself out.

A full circle.

And, as always, it was greatly due to the “human factor.”

I wouldn’t be here today without all of those who opened their hearts, homes, and sometimes wallets to help me on my journey. While the immigration system may be unfair, and some very loud Americans are vehemently opposed to immigrants, the country as a whole (91%) favors immigration.

It’s in the DNA of most Americans to welcome the stranger, and I felt this firsthand.

  • American families took me in as their own.

  • Generous benefactors invested in my education and causes.

  • Acquaintances and colleagues spoke passionately in my favor in private and in public.

  • Clients made referrals over and over again without reservation.

  • Friends opened doors and supported me through thick and thin.

Each time, I felt more valued, courageous, and audaciously hopeful to keep going.

From Milwaukee to Green Bay, Chicago to Los Angeles, and many other places in this beautiful country, I found love, hope, and belonging. I felt more convinced in the fundamental goodness of the American people and my place among you.

Because of YOU – because of this spirit of “E Pluribus Unum”, that out of many, we come together as one – my story is possible.

Although I’ve been a part of the American fabric from start, at this significant junction, it feels right to rededicate myself anew…

While keenly aware of America’s imperfections, past and present, I pledge to do my part in keeping the mighty dream of America alive. As the immigrant who clutched onto this dream for at least half of my life, this pledge is felt deeply. I am, and always will be, unequivocally bullish about the promise and the possibility of a just, equitable, and more perfect America for all.

I believe in America that honors its past but  is unapologetically committed to ushering in an even brighter future.

I believe in this nation filled with courageous pioneers and fearless leaders who are building a society where every person breathes free. I love it for it is filled with people of diverse backgrounds that make up a colorful tapestry that is our strength. It is a land of love and generosity, justice and fairness, innovation and bold creativity where opportunity is real and human potential harnessed.

Because that is who WE are, as Americans, at our core and at our best.

A beacon of hope for the world, a promise that the best is yet to come.

This, I believe – with every ounce of my being.

Thank you for being a part of my journey.
